The Student Council Symposium 2012 is a forum for students, post docs, and young researchers in the fields of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. Participants will have the opportunity to present their work to an international audience, build a network within the computational biology community and develop important soft skills in an environment that fosters exchange of ideas and knowledge.

ISCB Student Council Symposium is preceding Tutorials' Day of ISMB Conference at Long Beach, California.

Fellowships to attend High Performance Computing(HiPC) Conference : Bangalore: Dec 18-21, 2011

RSG-India is pleased to announce that the 18th annual IEEE
International Conference on High Performance Computing (HiPC 2011) will be held in Bengaluru (Bangalore), India, during *December 18-21, 2011.

HiPC is an international meeting on high performance computing which serves as a forum to present the current work by researchers from all over the world. The conference will host several core computing sessions such as
Workshop on Hybrid Computing and Keynote on Challenges in Computing. This year HiPC has leaped ahead in addressing the Computational challenges faced by Life Sciences Domain. The Conference will also discuss the same in a symposium on Next Generation Sequencing Techniques and associated infrastructure. The session involves participation from Industry experts, Academia and Researchers.

A tete- à-tete with industry experts will also help Job aspirants
know about the niche requirements of Life Science Industry and harness
the requisite skills.

As a part of our collaboration with the HiPC team, RSG-India members
are provided with an exclusive opportunity to avail a travel fellowship
to attend the conference. The fellowship can be used to claim Travel
expenses, accommodation and contribution towards the registration fee. . A
detailed document is attached with this mail. Please refer the same for
more details.

RSG-India will be representing the Indian Bioinformatics Student
community at The HiPC Venue via a Booth in the Industry Exhibits section.

Virtual symposium organized by RSG Pakistan

RSG Pakistan organized a symposium in collaboration with National Academy of Young Scientists (NAYS) and weekly Technology Times that was attended by more than 30 students from 29 different institutions of Pakistan. Six speakers from foreign and local universities spoke on a variety topics. See here for more details.

2011 ISCB Student Council Symposium Awards

The 7th Annual ISCB Student Council Symposium, held in Vienna Austria on July 15, 2011, was a huge success! More than 80 student delegates from all over the world had an opportunity to listen to 10 excellent oral presentations and review 48 posters on topics ranging from sequence analysis to bioinformatics tools and transcriptomics. We awarded six prizes for outstanding student oral and poster presentations. First place winner for the Best Oral Presentation was Amit Deshwar of the University of Torono. Benjamin Kwan from the University of Ottawa took first place for the Best Poster Presentation. Though-provoking keynotes from Dr. Chad Myers, Dr. Ivet Bahar, and Dr. Curtis Huttenhower were also well received, and generated many questions from the student audience. The Student Council is currently processing requests for information, following up on the many suggestions received during ISMB, and considering how to apply what we learned this year to make our 2012 symposium even better. Many thanks to everyone (volunteers and delegates) who helped make this year's Symposium rock!

RSG Eastern Africa co-organizes EMBO Global Exchange Lecture Course - Next Generation Sequencing for Africa

Regional Student Group of Eastern Africa (RSG Eastern Africa) in collaboration with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) , Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA), and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) is organising a 10 day EMBO Global Exchange Lecture Course titled "Next Generation sequencing for Africa". The Course will take place from 31st August to 9th September at the African Institute for Capacity Development (AICAD) at Nairobi, Kenya

About the 10 day course:
Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies have drawn the attention of the scientific community due to its unprecedented power and relatively low cost. This new technology has huge potential to accelerate agricultural biotechnology.
The objective of this lecture course is to familiarize researchers and students in Africa to the potential of NGS in agricultural biotechnology and to learn the best practices in this fast evolving field. This Lecture Course will be based on a series of conceptual, background and methodological lectures centred on Next Generational Sequencing (NGS).

Topics will include:
NGS: background, basic concepts and main challenges
Understanding the underlying technology: overview, constrains and future directions
Data management: experimental design and handling NGS data
Genomes and Genomes Browsing
Metagenomics and deep sequencing in transcriptomics
Practical applications of NGS, challenges and the way forward

Call for abstracts and travel fellowships for 7th ISCB Student Council Symposium (Vienna, Austria)

Submit your abstract today to participate in the 7th Symposium of the International Society for Computational Biology Student Council on July 15th 2011 in Vienna!

The Student Council Symposium aims at bringing together young computational biologists from all areas of research and parts of the world. As the central part of our symposium 12 student presentations will be selected from the submitted abstracts. This is your chance to present your work! We accept abstracts covering both scientific studies as well as novel tools and applications in the field of computational biology and bioinformatics.

Travel Fellowships are available (see website) and awards will be given to best poster and best presentation.

Regional Student Group Pakistan in Weekly Technology Times

Regional Student Group (RSG) Pakistan was featured in the February 14-20, 2011 issue of the Weekly Technology Times, Pakistan’s newspaper on science and technology. The article discusses the benefits of RSGs to computational biology students, particularly in a country where bioinformatics is still a relatively young field. RSGs North Africa, Portugal and Spain publish meeting report from jointly organized symposium at Malaga, Spain

The first North Africa, Portugal and Spain Student Symposium on Bioinformatics(NPS3Bio) was held on October 26, in Malaga (Spain) as a special session within the X Jornadas de Bioinformática (Workshop on Bioinformatics for Personalized Medicine). The meeting report describes the variety of invited talks, student talks and posters presented during the meeting. Here are links to photos and a video from the event. This meeting was jointly organized by Regional Student Groups North Africa, Portugal and Spain.

BMC Bionformatics publishes 6th ISCB Student Council Symposium abstracts

This meeting report gives an overview of the keynote lectures and a selection of the student oral and poster presentations at the 6th International Society for Computational Biology Student Council Symposium that was held as a precursor event to the annual international conference on Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology (ISMB). The symposium was held in Boston, MA, USA on July 9th, 2010.

Successful projects from the first round of Regional Student Group funding

The first funding cycle of this initiative was very competitive with a number of excellent proposals being submitted. Proposals from RSG-India, RSG-Eastern Africa and RSG-Brazil (partial funding) were selected for support. The events organized by these regional student groups were as follows

RSG Eastern Africa - A 3 day workshop and hackathon about Open Source projects and BioRuby. At the end of the workshop, the BioRuby libraries developed during the Hackathon were submitted to the BepiPred project, a B-cell epitope prediction tool. Pictures of the event and of other RSG-Eastern Africa's events can be seen at their facebook page
RSG-India - Guest lectures are going to be organized at the Comp Bio Discussion group, which is a journal club/discussion group run by RSG-India with fortnightly meetings
RSG Brazil - A guest lecturer was invited for a student focused event at the X-Meeting, the annual Brazilian Bioinformatics meeting

Call for proposals for second round of Regional Student Group funding

Its time for the second round of proposals for funding from Regional Student Groups (RSGs). We encourage you to apply if your RSG is looking to organize any small event or start an initiative. You will need to submit the following

A 1-2 page description of the event/initiative with motivation, benefits and plan for execution.
Detailed budget with justification of costs. An RSG can request for funds of up to $400 USD.

The proposals are due by December 15th. Also to let everyone get a fair chance, RSGs that were funded during the previous funding cycle, are not eligible to apply this cycle. RSG leaders interested in applying for funding should contact rsg@iscbsc.org.

You can register to the student symposium even if you do not attend ECCB. It only costs 100 euros, but will be 150 euros after the early registration deadline.

The Student Symposium accepts late poster submissions till August 16, with notification on August 18. We actively encourage you to submit work you are presenting at ECCB to the Student Symposium as well.

- a keynote presentation by Yves Van de Peer about Generating hypotheses
for molecular biology through (top-down) systems biology
- a soft skill workshop on the use of theatre skills for presenting
- student presentations from abstract submissions

The Education Committee is interested to find out about your views regarding mentoring schemes that pair students with more senior members of the computational biology community.

For now our goal is to establish if there is interest in such an offering among Student Council members and members of our Regional Student Groups.
