What is the Student Council?
The ISCB Student Council facilitates opportunities for development and growth to young members of ISCB.
Our mission is to develop the next generation computational biologists.
ISCB Student Council was the vision of Manuel Corpas and was officially
approved by ISCB Board of Directors during ISMB 2004. The ISCB Student Council is a section of ISCB
dedicated to facilitating opportunities of development for students and young researchers in the field of
Computational Biology and Bioinformatics.

"ISCB-SC: The World of Transformation"
In the world of success, information is the greatest assest. It is definetely true to say that
information is the gateway to transformation in life.
The success story of my exposure to the world of bioinformatics began when I made the decision
to join the International Society for Computational Biology Student Council (ISCB-SC) in the year
2005 from my home country, Nigeria with the advice of my supervisor, Ezekiel Adebiyi of
Covenant University, Ota Nigeria.
I must confess that ISCB-SC has an effective way of encouraging and disseminating relevant
information to new students in the field of bioinformatics. Just in a couple of months after I joined
this great body, I was properly guided under the leadership of the former president and Student Council Symposium Chair,
Vijaya Parthiban & Nils Gehlenborg respectively.
I was enlightened in the best way to develop a career in bioinformatics and get a solid foundation
to move ahead in this emerging field. Little did I know that this information would land me in
Europe at the Cologne University Bioinformatics Center, at the University of Cologne, Germany
where I was offered a scholarship for one year to pursue a postgraduate training course in
bioinformatics.
Indeed, my involvement in ISCB-SC has really given me a lot of real exposure to the bioinformatics
world. ISCB-SC has also offered me a lot of information on opportunities such as travel
fellowship grants for many conferences and workshops.
May I use this medium to express my heartfelt gratitude to the founder of ISCB-SC, Manuel
Corpas for his vision of pioneering this organisation, and also to Vijaya Parthiban & Nils Gehlenborg
for their active roles in bringing up the new generation computational biologists.
On a final note, I would like to encourage every young researcher and student who intend to thrive
in the field of computational biology, bioinformatics and systems biology to make sure they
join the ISCB-SC and be part of what I call the world of transformation.
