The speaker
Prof. Bart Noordam, Ph.D. (1964) is co-author with Patricia Gosling of the book “Mastering Your Ph.D.: Survival and Success in the Doctoral Years and Beyond”, rated as a must reading for Ph.D. students and supervisors of all times. After a scientific career of ten years that culminated with a position as department head of the scientific research institute FOM-AMOLF and a professorship at the VU University Amsterdam, Bart Noordam worked for management consultants McKinsey & Company (where he was involved in restructuring former government organisations and developing plans for European pension funds, among other things). He was able to further hone his skills in analytical research and management from 2002 to 2005 as director of FOM-AMOLF (200 employees), and from 2005 to 2008 when, as director, he established an auditor’s office with statutory responsibility for the provinces of Flevoland, Noord-Holland, Utrecht and Zuid-Holland. From February 2008 to April 2009 he was director of the Imaging Department of ASML. He was appointed dean of the Faculty of Science of the UvA effective 1 May 2009.
