About the Symposium  [Top]

The ISCB Student Council is organizing the 2nd Student Council Symposium to be held on Sunday, August 6th, in parallel to the ISMB 2006 tutorial sessions in Fortaleza, Brazil. The Student Council Symposium is a forum for students and young researchers in the field of computational biology. Participants will have the opportunity to present their work to an international audience, build a network within the computational biology community and develop important soft skills in an environment that fosters exchange of ideas and knowledge.
Keynote speakers Philip Bourne (UC San Diego), Reinhard Schneider (EMBL) and Julio Collado-Vides (UNAM - Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico) will give an overview of their respective research areas and provide participants with advice on how to build a successful career in a rapidly evolving discipline. Current ISCB President Michael Gribskov (Purdue) will deliver the closing remarks. This is a rare opportunity for aspiring scientists to interact with the pioneers of the field.

Abstracts  [Top]

All poster and presentation abstracts are now availabe on a separate abstracts page. PDFs of posters and presentations will be made accessible shortly.

The organizing committee is currently negotiating publication of selected abstracts in BMC Bioinformatics with funds provided by the Institute for Systems Biology.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of the following reviewers whose contributions were crucial to the success of the Student Council Symposium: Carlos Rodriguez, Heladia Salgado, Vipin Sachdeva, Malika Veeramalai, Venkat Mathura and all members of the organizing committee.

Awards  [Top]

Pavol Hanus of the Technical University Munich, Germany is the winner of the Best Presentation Award sponsored by Oxford Journals (Oxford University Press), worth 200 GBP/~380 USD. The award-winning presentation is titled "Synchronization Model of Transcription Initiation in Prokaryotes and its Kinetic Interpretation". The abstract can be found on the abstracts page.

Feng Chen of the University of Pennsylvania, USA is the winner of the Best Poster Award sponsored by BMC Bioinformatics (BioMed Central), worth 100 GBP/~190 USD. The award-winning poster is titled "Evaluating Orthology Detection Approaches in the Absence of a Gold Standard". The abstract can be found on the abstracts page.

The Student Council and its sponsors congratulate the winners on their excellent work!

Making Computational Biology Career Choices
Philip Bourne (UC San Diego, La Jolla, USA)

Abstract - Choosing a career path in computational biology (or any career for that matter) should be made through reaching a compromise between your head and your heart. Your head can assess the opportunities and your heart will lead you to the subset of choices that you are most passionate about. How did one seasoned veteran strike a balance in his career and what are the opportunities that you have today? Come and listen and hopefully you will gain some insights as you grapple with decisions that will shape the rest of your life.

Modeling the evolution of gene and protein interactions
Todd A. Gibson (University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Aurora, USA)

Differentiated Evolutionary Rates in Alternative Exons and the Implications for Splicing Regulation
Eduardo Eyras (Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain)

Gene Prioritization by Genomic Data Fusion
Peter Van Loo (University of Leuven, Leuven, Belgium)

Theoretical biology, gene regulation, bioinformatics, and systems biology. Or what you see when looking back.
Julio Collado-Vides (Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, Cuernavaca, Mexico)

Abstract - I will share with you some questions and motivations that have guided my career. As a scientist whose career has been mostly in Mexico, Fortaleza is the perfect place for this talk. I will describe RegulonDB, the database of gene regulation in E.coli; an example of so much data available, and so hard to make sense of, in an integrated understanding; and will finish with analyses on the topology of the network.
11:50 amRoom A Presentations

Recovering Regulatory Interactions in Escherichia coli through Partial Correlation Analysis of Microarray Data
Fabio Fernandes da Rocha Vicente (Laboratorio Nacional de Computacao Cientifica, Petropolis, Brazil)

Synchronization Model of Transcription Initiation in Prokaryotes and its Kinetic Interpretation
Pavol Hanus (Technial University of Munich, Munich, Germany)

Power CoClustering detecting multiple regulatory influences in gene expression data
Shay Zakov (Ben Gurion University, Beer Sheva, Israel)
(Presentation cancelled due to the current situation in the Mideast.)

Data Integration and Visualization
Reinhard Schneider (EMBL, Heidelberg, Germany)

Abstract - The talk will give a short overview of the research and service activities of the group at the EMBL in Heidelberg. The focus will be the different projects in the area of data integration and knowledge management and will give a short outlook on new visualization tools. In the second part of the talk I will comment on some career building related questions.
03:50 pmRoom A Presentations

Machine Learning Algorithms for Polymorphism Detection
Gabriele Schweikert (Friedrich Miescher Laboratory of the Max Planck Society, Tuebingen, Germany)

Comparative Genomics in Mycobacteria: insights from Multiple Genome Alignments
Alejandro Reyes (Corpogen, Bogota, Colombia)

Evaluating Orthology Detection Approaches in the Absence of a Gold Standard
Feng Chen (University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA)
04:50 pmRoom AClosing Remarks

Biology for the Future
Michael Gribskov, ISCB President (Purdue University, West Lafayette, USA)

Abstract - Computational biology, or bioinformatics, plays an increasingly important role in biology. Is computational biology a new field, a new tool, or a new way of looking at things? Perhaps it is all of these. I will discuss the role of bioinformatics and computational biology in the 21st century, the challenges that we face on both the biological and computational sides, and where I think we are headed.
07:30 pmSal e BrasaSocial Event and Dinner

The event will take place at the "Churrascaria Sal e Brasa" close to the ISMB headquarters hotel (Oasis Atlantico Imperial). The Sal e Brasa is a typical Brazilian steakhouse but offers a wide range of vegetarian options as well. The restaurant is an all-you-can-eat venue and considered to be the finest steakhouse in Fortaleza.

Address - Churrascaria Sal e Brasa; Av. Abolicao, 3500; Meireles, Telephone: (85) 3261-8888.
It is strongly recommended that you take a taxi from your hotel.

Previous ISCB Student Council Symposia  [Top]

1. ISCB Student Council Symposium at ECCB 2005 in Madrid, Spain

The 1st ISCB Student Council Symposium was held on 28th of September immediately preceding ECCB 2005 in Madrid. We initiated the review process of student abstracts and were pleasantly surprised by the quality and quantity of abstracts submitted. We received over 60 abstracts in 7 different categories covering a wide range of topics within computational biology. From these we selected 20 for oral presentation on the symposium and another 36 for poster presentations at ECCB. For more information on the 1st International Student Council Symposium in Computational Biology please visit http://www.eccb05.org/student.htm.

An evaluation of this event can be downloaded along with the corresponding questionnaire can be downloaded as PDFs: Evaluation, Questionnaire.
