“Science is much more fun when we share and collaborate and the ISCB SC is a perfect place to facilitate it! My motivation in joining the SC is to contribute to openness in science and democratisation of knowledge through organising accessible events and bringing enthusiastic students all around the world together. I am looking forward to the ways we will enable young computational biologists to come together, exchange ideas, and grow as a well-connected community.” - Melike Dönertaş
About:
Melike Dönertaş is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Leibniz Institute on Aging - Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) in Jena, Germany. Melike completed her BSc in Molecular Biology and Genetics and MSc in Biological Sciences at the Middle East Technical University in Turkey, where she started to be involved in SC activities through RSG Turkey. During her master’s degree, Melike worked on diverse topics from ancient DNA, population genetics to transcriptome evolution. Her thesis was on comparative analysis of gene expression changes during development and ageing. She completed her PhD at the University of Cambridge as an EMBL fellow and completed her PhD projects at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), where she continued to work on the basic biology of ageing and age-related diseases and drug repurposing. She worked as a postdoctoral researcher briefly at the EMBL-EBI and then at the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Aging. Throughout her studies, Melike contributed to many events organised in Turkey and took an active part in initiating and maintaining the RSG Turkey webinar project. Melike continued to be in the core team of RSG Turkey until 2019 when she joined the SC RSG Committee to co-chair the webinar initiative. She also co-chaired SCS2020, which was converted to a virtual event due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
